Ben Kacyra, an inventor and civil engineer, has made a significant contribution to the field of archaeological research. He has created a foundation for exploring the research of a camera-like device that uses lasers to scan 3D objects. It then creates digital blueprints of objects like archaeological ruins with an accuracy within a few millimeters. Kacyra developed the laser-mapping tool to solve a problem in construction. It was designed to keep accurate records of the real dimensions of factories and power plants when they deviated from an architect's plans. He sold his invention in 2001 and currently works to get the tool to archaeological researchers. These researchers use it to create electronic blueprints that allow scientists at remote computers to examine ancient monuments closely. Kacyra, who works with his wife Barbara, has created a website that lets visitors see the blueprint-like images. In the future, they would like to be able to superimpose real graphics on top of the maps to recreate ancient worlds on the computer screen. Kacyra says his project is part of sharing his love of the past, which he learned growing up in Mosul, a city in Iraq known during biblical times as Ninevah. Kacyra was often called upon during his career in civil engineering to create 'as-built' blueprints of large industrial operations like refiners. Safety managers used these to find the exact locations of critical components.
