Many parents are purchasing cell phones for their children as a safety measure. However, cell phones bring several problems. Parents have no way to know who their children talk to or send text messages to, and they do not know what is said on the calls or in the messages, which are typed with an abbreviated slang. Cell phones allow digital photos and videos to be captured and sent to other phones rapidly, and smart phones have the capability to let users surf the Internet wherever they are. Parent can get some help from a new software product called Radar from eAgency Inc. the product is designed for children 8 to 14 years of age, and while it does not yet work on basic cell phones, and although it has limitations, improvements are scheduled for the future. Radar does not notify parents when their child uses a cell phone for web browsing or instant messaging, for example, but eAgency says that future versions of the software will have this capability. In general, Radar is user-friendly and can be used even by parents who are wary of technology. The firm imposes a monthly fee on a single user or family basis, which allows for the monitoring of as many as five accounts. There is no limit on how many people may be alerted to a phone's activities, since there is no need to download Radar. Notifications are sent through text messages or e-mail to the mobile devices of parents.
