People who like to watch music videos and other video content have often assumed that subscribing to a mobile video service, which would allow them to watch such content on their cellphones, would require an extremely expensive phone and high monthly fees. However, there is a new free mobile video service that works with many of the cellphones currently used by consumers. MyWaves is one of several startup companies that are offering new methods for accessing Internet video on cellphones. They are hoping to overcome the obstacles that prevent mobile video from going mainstream in the past. Cellular carriers like Verizon Wireless and AT&T Inc. have offered licensed video content for cellphones for some time, but the services impose monthly subscriber fees, offer limited content that is programmed by the carrier, and typically work only with specific phones. These factors have resulted in slow adoption among consumers for mobile video. The new services are taking a different approach, however. They let users view a broader range of Internet video clips without locking them into a subscription or requiring them to buy a different phone. Each of the new services function differently, but generally, users can view online video on any standard video-enabled cell phone. Videos can also be downloaded wirelessly to a handset so users can watch them at their convenience. Sometimes, the videos can be streamed over cell networks and watched in real time.
