A pairing of Google and Salesforce holds a potential of becoming a strong force in the area of hosted applications. Rumors have been circulating about a possible acquisition or a strategic alliance between Google and Salesforce. If a deal is struck, there are a host of new and innovative products and services that could result from such partnership. Google has been working to be a strong player in the search, ads and apps arena. So far, the company has been not as dominant in the apps business, and its experience in the SAAS (software as a service) mold is still insufficient. Salesforce, which is considerably an expert in SAAS, could help Google achieve what it needs to do in the apps business. Aside from the SAAS factor, the two companies combined could foster a possible move for Google much like what Amazon did in EC2, or Elastic Compute Cloud, where Amazon rented out some of its data center capacity for arbitrary virtual machines. Through Salesforce, Google could bring customization opportunities in a simpler manner. Recently, Salesforce announced the release of Apex, a platform for creating applications to run on Salesforce infrastructure. It could be difficult for Google to merge the system into its own since Google works on MySQL, whereas Salesforce uses Oracle. However, Google and Salesforce combination still makes a lot of sense.
