Scott Mace comments on calendaring, which he and his readers think should be just like e-mail, especially in the areas of choice of client, standardization, low cost, and interoperability. Interoperability among calendars is a problem that has hung on, but the currently almost universally connected world, lack of calendar interoperability OS a crucial problem. Karen Hober of Burton Group also says the primary issue facing customers with calendaring is how to share free and busy information across organizational boundaries. Calendaring has developed with close ties to messaging infrastructure, in that it is held within a specific system, such as Exchange Server or Domino Server. For instance, Boeing now has to schedule meetings by e-mail, and has found that 80 percent of time spent arranging meetings was for determining free/busy information and that some meetings required about 20 hours to arrange. CalConnect is leading the standards development effort, but is not a standard-setting body. Standards related work is submitted to Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) or other standards bodies. Highlighted are the CalDAV calendaring and scheduling facets of CalConnect (an extension to the WebDAV standard) and CalConnect proposals to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) for simplification and rationalization of the existing base calendars standards (under the auspices of the CALSIFY working group). Upcoming products highlighted are Tungle Client, AvailiTime, Ikordo from Volutio, and the TimeBridge service. For instance, The TimeBridge Service puts a New Meeting button in Microsoft Outlook that allows the user to create a TimeBridge meeting proposal. Tungle Client integrates with Outlook and publishes information to other authorized Tungle users, and AvailiTimes client integrates with calendars of choice, enabling sharing of the information with others trusted by the user.
