Some technology managers have found that, rather than choosing laptops, software, and other components for employees, the results are more satisfactory when employees choose and purchase the equipment themselves. Thats the experience of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, where dozens of IT staff were given an allowance of $203 for two years and got the go-ahead to purchase cellphones for company use. Those who selected phones that cost more paid the difference, and those who chose cheaper phones kept the difference. The phones had to run Microsoft Windows Mobile 5 or 6 operating system (OS) for KLM to ensure access to corporate e-mail. Users had to handle technical issues and replace phones that broke down. The program proved to be less costly for the company, and the employees also preferred it. Other companies highlighted that have experience in the same type of employee purchase program are Royal Mail Holdings and Eli Lilly & Company, and Lloyds TSB Group has the practice under consideration. In many companies, IT wants to keep close control over computer users for security and doesnt want to service large numbers of different devices. Large corporate IT departments can negotiate special pricing, but large retailers such as Wal-Mart and Best Buy can still get unmatchable prices. When company cost for setup is considered, companies pay more for computers than they would paying retail.
