Title: A Booster Shot for Anti-Virus

Many emerging players are offering developments in antivirus solutions that are worth looking at, as entrenched antivirus vendors become complacent in improving their products. As shown by tests conducted by eWeek Labs on Microsofts FCS (Forefront Client Security), eEye Digital Securitys Blink Professional 3.0 and Kaspersky Labs Anti-Virus 6.0, are attacking the virus problem from varied background and through diverse angles. Analog Devices found out that Microsofts FCS, with its reporting features and quick Premier support staff, beat its previous anti-virus solution from an established vendor when the company was attacked with a new malware soon after it begun its FCS pilot program. FCS-hosted technologies, such as Active Directory and Windows Server Update for software and policy distribution, and MOM (Microsoft Operations Manager) and SWL Server for data collection, alerting and reporting, offer Analog a broad picture of client security positions, along with comprehensive reports on malware infestation. Kaspersky has been the forerunner in the development of automated malware detection and signature creation tools. The company has also deployed a nimble response staff that guarantees new signatures every hour. But releasing these capabilities to the enterprise market entails a management infrastructure. The investment that Kaspersky has allocated to building this infrastructure signifies less resources for innovation in the area of security. Now that Kaspersky has built its central management platform in the form of the Admin Kit, its products capability to implement client packages, malware signatures and policies has matured to meet the expectations of business customers.
