Title: 'Longhorn' Does More with Less

Longhorn Server from Microsoft Corp. has new and expanded functionality. This is the product designed to succeed Windows 2003 Server, and it also does more with less, say industry observers. Testers of the Beta 3 version of Longhorn found that Microsoft has made progress in creating more helpful server management tools. The company has also found new ways to deploy Longhorn that expose less surface area to attack than was available in previous versions. In particular, testers liked Longhorn's support for serving as a read-only domain controller. This limits exposure of critical directory information by accessing and caching credentials on an as-needed basis. With this approach, only the local credentials, at a branch office, for example, would be exposed if the read-only domain controller at that office were stolen. Another interesting feature of Longhorn Beta 3 is its support for deployment in a Server Core configuration. In this approach, the product runs only with the binaries required to carry out a few of core Windows roles. The interface of Server Core has been reduced to little more than a command line, and this will save on system resources and eliminate the need for many of the patches expected in the full version of Longhorn. The product still needs a lot of work, say testers of the first publicly accessible Longhorn Server test release.
