Facebooks namesake social networking website could soon be a place where you can involve your friends in everything you do online. Facebook has 24 million members around the world and adds about 150,000 new members per day. Any Company, Internet service, or software maker also can now build services for its members on Facebook. Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO and founder of Facebook, set Silicon Valley abuzz with has announcement of such plans for the site, which he wants to convert to something of an operating system so that you can run full applications. Among 65 companies that launched 85 new Facebook applications at F8 were Microsoft and Washington Post Company. While social networking in general is fragmented, Facebook wants its pre-recruited members to have access through a Facebook-enabled set of service and platform. Topics covered include the reasons that Facebook is set apart from other social networking sites, Mark Zuckerberg's background, Don Graham of the Post's investment in Facebook, and Facebook's decision last fall to open its service to everyone and to introduce News Feed, which is an automated flow of information into a Facebook home page. If tools emerge that allow Facebook users to be more efficient at communicating among themselves about products and services they use, marketers could face frightening ramifications.
