Palm's Foleo, a newly announced small, laptop-like digital device intended as a companion to multipurpose cell phones, is described as exciting and able to complete the vision of Palm by Palm Founder Jeff Hawkins, but some analysts disagree. One analyst says Foleo is a disappointment because of its large size and weight, and another says he is dubious about the number of people who want to carry around a high-priced device without laptop abilities such as Microsoft Office or multimedia player abilities. Its a tweener device that has an undefined audience, says Jack Gold of J. Gold Associates. Mr. Gold notes that Palm would have been better served by updating its Treo to make it a better rival to BlackBerrys and Nokias. The Foleo, which only synchronizes e-mail accounts from Pocket Outlook for Windows Mobile and Versamail, could have more e-mail system support in the future, said Mr. Hawkins. The device is not meant to replace a laptop, and its processor is small so that it doesnt support Internet view well. The Livescribe digital pen from the company of the same name includes a rechargeable battery, microphone, speakers, Universal Serial Bus (USB) port, and an LED screen. Livescribe can remember what was written when it is used on specific types of paper, and plugging it into a PC allows storage of the handwritten notes. These and other products, including Microsoft's touch-screen, table-top computer for manipulation of photos, music, and other programs, were shown at the D conference.
