When film studios give the go-ahead to make a blockbuster, they are now also working with game development teams to create video games based on their movies. The global video game market is worth about $30 billion, and the power of new game consoles has made it easier for films and games to share digital assets. Movie studios are taking advantage of the technology to make close partnerships with game developers in order to raise the quality of the film-based games to ever higher levels. For example, in the spring of 2006, Activision signed a multi-year contract with DreamWorks Animation for the exclusive video game rights for several DreamWorks films. DreamWorks announced that Activision will open a studio facility on the campus of DreamWorks Animation. According to Robert Kotick, chairman and chief executive officer of Activision, the collaboration represents a major step in the convergence of Hollywood films and video games. For the first time, he says, this company will have the ability to align game production schedules with those of the films. Additionally, the close collaboration will allow the firm to leverage the movie assets and story lines. Other studios besides DreamWorks have begun to offer considerable support to game developers as well. These include Sony Pictures Entertainment, Walt Disney Studios, and Paramount.
