The research project called MyLifeBits was conducted by Gordon Bell and Jim Gemell and was meant to provide some of the tools needed to compile a lifelong digital archive. They found that digital memories permit an individual to relive an event with sounds and images that make the recollection and reflection particularly vivid. The resources created allow every word read (in e-mail, an electronic document, or on a website) to be found with a few keyboard presses. A summary of the way in which a day in the digital life is conducted begins with a professors search for the name of an author and a stockbrokers ability to archive all documents, e-mails, and archives. As the day progresses, beneficial use of digital resources by their family members helps them, for instance, learn how best they learn and also relive old memories interactively. A history of digital archiving highlights Memex, the increase in digital storage capacity, and a new generation of lower-cost sensors that could soon be everywhere. Gordon Bells digital memory archiving began in 1998 when he went paperless and needed a better way to use information in software. Some of MyLifeBits features are in commercial processes, including full-text search.
