Microsoft Robotics Studio is changing the robotics application landscape with its emergence in the market. It is taking the lead in the introduction of robots and robotic devices that will go beyond the usual capabilities and applications of todays machines. According to Georgia Tech's Tucker Balch, associate professor in the College of Computing, the new software development kit paves the way for easy development of robotic applications. Such ease on the development side will lead to technology deployment in the economic side including consumer products. The general manager of the Microsoft Robotics Group said that the goal is to deliver a cost-effective, open platform that would help robot developers incorporate software and hardware into their designs. Three areas of software are featured in the development kit. First is the runtime architecture that can be applied in all kinds of robots. Second is a set of tools that ensure easy programming and debugging of robots. A simulation tool is offered by Microsoft Robotics Studio to help developers design and test robotic applications in a three-dimensional virtual environment. Third is the availability of over 30 tutorials in addition to samples with source code that assist in the creation of robotics application. The development kit can be licensed free of charge for academics, hobbyists, and students. Commercial robot developers can buy the kit to generate revenue from robots, services, and applications.
