IBM unveiled security enhancements to its virtualization products at the IDC Virtualization Forum held on February 6, 2007. Analysts believe that IBM's virtualization technology can enter the 2.0 stage where the application is expected in servers as well as in other sectors. Such possible applications include networking devices, PCs and storage systems. Officials at the technology company also stressed that its virtualization technology can be used not only in simple consolidation project, but also in various tasks such as backup and disaster recovery. For instance, IBM is using the Secure Hypervisor or sHype architecture as an embedded tool that encompasses a hypervisor to ensure security of virtualized workload. sHype is the same architecture applied with x86 and blade servers. Aside from migrating with the workload, sHype also delivers similar security features originally built for data protection. An IBM official said that the idea is to ensure mandatory access control. sHype will perform with proprietary hypervisors or with open-source hypervisors including Xen. At the IDC event, IBM also introduced an updated version of its z/VM virtualization technology for mainframes. Such an update will allow the company to re-focus its goal of making mainframe servers as an option in the data center category.
