Title: Yahoo Teams with Viacom

Author: Liedtke, Michael Article Type: Product Analysis

Yahoo! has landed a multi-year deal and online ad partnership with Viacom. The score could make Yahoo! more competitive with Google, with which Viacom is engaged in a legal fight over video copyrights. Viacom is likely to get between 70 percent and 80 percent of revenue generated from the Yahoo! ads, based on an estimation of the usual commissions in the Internet industry. Small, text-based ads will be seen beside search results and other relevant content on 33 Viacom-owned websites including those of MTV, VH1, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, and BET. In the past, Viacom sold the ads. Google, responding to Viacom's lawsuit (which alleges copyright violation when YouTube repeatedly shows clips from Viacom shows without permission), has said the video site obeys the law by removing copyrighted material when asked. Yahoo! and Google have been ramping up competition over the years, and Yahoo!'s hope is that it can catch up with Google's ad success with its new ad formula called Panama. Terry Semel of Yahoo! said the Viacom deal is the start of a strong and friendly partnership between Yahoo! and Viacom.
