Title: Palm Readies a Treo with Linux Inside

Author: Kim, Ryan Article Type: Product Analysis
Source: San Francisco Chronicle, pC3(1) Publication Date: Apr 11, 2007

Palm is planning the introduction of a Palm Treo based on the Linux operating system (OS) as part of Palm's strategy for increasing global sales of its smartphones. CEO Ed Colligan informed investors and analysts that the plan will allow Linux-based Treo handsets to do voice and data functions concurrently. Palm will continue to sell a Windows-based Treo. Palm should grow substantially in the future as the smartphone market pioneered by Palm continues to expand to a Palm-predicted value of $36 billion by 2009. Palm expects a growing percentage of those sales. Company executives said they will in time move to a common hardware platform for all Palm cellphones as a way to reduce development time and costs. Mr. Colligan and other executives declined to comment on rumors that Palm is for sale, and company officials also avoided speaking of a new device rumored to be under development from Palm's founder, Jeff Hawkins. Palm has been increasingly competing with Research in Motion (RIM), Nokia, Samsung, and Motorola, and will soon compete with the iPhone from Apple.
