Electronic Arts, the largest maker of videogames in the world, now has a new record label for promoting new artists. Electronic Arts puts their music in videogames. The label, called Artwerk, will be owned jointly with Nettwerk One Music, said EA. Video games pay royalties to labels, publishers, and artists for use of music in games, or hey hire musicians to create sound tracks. Signing artists will lower royalty costs and provide revenue from CD and digital music product sales. Among brands that have been strengthened via videos have been Jet and Franz Ferdinand, and EA sells about 6 million copies of Madden NFL per year. Artwerk's first artist is Junkie Extensible Style Language (XSL), whose tracks have been put into Madden NFL 07 and Need for Speed Carbon. Artwerk says Junkie XL is a producer of electronic club music and remixes. The label venture, said EA, is a full-service music label and is in negotiations with several other very current acts. Artwerk will sign and develop new and established artist for publishing and record deals. The music will be sold through iTunes, Rhapsody, eMusic, and other venues, and Artwerk will also try to sign deals to put the works of musicians in movies, TV shows, and videogames.
