Talk-show-style live chat online is proliferating as web video becomes more of a medium in which a gathering of online people seem to watch TV together in a more social venue. An example is iVillage Live, which is on TV and also offered on the Web. A visitor can split the computer screen between a video of the show and an instant messaging (IM) window, where the chatters can swap comments with dozens of others from the comfort of the living room. The Walt Disney Company's ABC Family network is also testing an online video platform that permits users to send messages while viewing episodes of its shows online. More video services are also embedded free instant messaging (IM) features into their sites to allow users to participate with screen names and discuss the video being watched. iVillage is produced by General Electric's NBC Universal and allows the online viewer to discuss the show as it is broadcast by using features on the right side of the screen. Hundreds sign on during the week to comment. The show is seen in 12 markets and online at iVillageLive.com. Online video services also use the technology to set themselves apart from the already popular video-sharing sites. Among participants, whether through the online services themselves or media companies, are Viacom, Joost, Jaman.com, Lycos Cinema, and Paltalk.
