Automakers can rely on adaptable vision system designs to adopt new ways in ensuring safety inside and outside of vehicles. An example of such vision systems is the Lexus LS460 or IMAPCAR solution from NEC Electronics. With such system, developers can deploy tough and powerful visual-recognition algorithms that solve the operation and power consumption requirements involved in designing automotives. IMAPCAR allows system developers to depend on all filters and algorithms in a high-level software language. The Automotive Systems Division of NEC Electronics teamed up with the in-house engineers of the Multimedia Research Institute or MRI. Architecture was created by the MRI designers based on massive parallelization. The integrated memory array processor for car electronics or IMAP-CE achieved 50 giga-operations per second performance at its peak during the 2003 International Solid-State Circuits Conference. Based on a single-instruction, multiple-data or SIMD concept, the IMAPCAR processor offers 128 processing elements operating in parallel. The IMAPCAR processor also manages inputs from close to three cameras in parallel. Such ability makes the processor appropriate for single and stereo camera products. Images of pedestrians, lane markers, and nearby objects are analyzed by the system using two stereo cameras. Through a dedicated system control interface, communication between the IMAPCAR processor and an external host is made possible.
