The two-minute video clips that make YouTube popular are only the start of online television. Several dozen companies are working to become the television networks of the future. Major media firms are starting to migrate their television shows and films to sites like iTunes, their own websites, or other online venues. The building blocks of a new video industry focused on the Web are in place. New types of programming and distribution have the potential to give viewers an infinite choice of content, and new advertising models will channel all of that viewing behavior into cash streams. New search technologies are being developed to help viewers find what they want to watch when they want it and in the location they want as well. The concept behind web television is based on the fact that all it takes is a videocamera, some computers, and a little talent to create a television program. And the audience for such content is growing as well. By 2009, more than half of the population in the United States will be using computers, iPods, and other devices to get their video. Online video is being created and distributed by several firms with different business models. Revision3 uses the sponsorship model, while others use the targeted-advertising model. Joost is one of these companies. Online video advertising is expected to reach a total of $2.9 billion by the end of 2009.
