The H-P iPAQ 510 Voice Messenger from Hewlett-Packard Company is the first real cell phone to come from the technology firm. It is scheduled for release in April or May of 2007. Past efforts to add phones to the H-P iPAQ products generally provided clumsy interfaces that suggested the phone was being 'crammed' into the data device. With the new 510 model, however, the company appears to have created an attractive gadget that has useful physical features. Many of these features are included on other smart phones on the market. The company uses a built-in voice-recognition system that allows users to dictate e-mail messages, and it reads received e-mail messages out load. However, testers noted that this capability is not a good substitute for a keyboard, and overall, they found the 510 to be disappointing. Dictated e-mails are send as audio attachments to messages. This precludes the ability of recipients to print, save or copy and paste these messages into other documents. Additionally, the e-mails are read in an unattractive robotic voice. Testers were also frustrated by having to use voice commands to enable the phone's functions. The iPAQ 510 runs Windows Mobile 6.0, and it can use Wi-Fi to provide cast network connections. It hides its smart phone 'brains' behind its appearance as a 'cute' and stylish cell phone, however. It includes a 1.3-mexapixel camera on its back side.
