Though 800 million subscribers have mobile phones that enable them to download or stream mobile video, only about 1.6 million subscribers signed up for subscription plans in 2006. Barriers to success in the mobile video market include inferior video quality, ubiquitous access to video content via other devices (computer or recorded TV), perceived low value for cost of additional service, and lack of predictability of user experience from location to location, and from device to device. The primary reason for a poor user experience is the capacity video requires from the operator. As few as five simultaneous users from a single cell station can degrade viewing experience.Vendors and researchers agree that the answer is to switch from unicast (one-to-one) video streaming to multicast (one-to-many), eliminating congestion at the base station.Carriers are working to build and license services to improve their broadcast capabilities, while also working with mobile advertising solutions to subsidize subscription costs for end users.
