Companies such as salesforce.com have proven that the software-as-a-service (SaaS) model can be highly successful. But what is SaaS, how does it deliver from the application service provider (ASP) model, and why is it suddenly growing so rapidly as a software delivery model? First, SaaS refers to software applications that run in a web browser without requiring any software installation on the users computer.Though often still used interchangeably, SaaS refers to software offered to a large customer base that uses the same database and server resources, while ASP refers to applications installed on a server for use by a single enterprise.Pricing models also differ, with SaaS models typically being subscription-based, while ASP models are often sold under mult-user licensing packages. The popularity of SaaS is growing because software can be kept current without reissuing and reinstalling software and users can access their SaaS applications from any available computer via a web browser.Large enterprises may be unwilling to give up control of their software environments to SaaS vendors, but small-to-medium businesses and consumers will benefit from ease-of-use and the pay-as-you-go model.
