Business organizations planning to adopt configuration management databases (CMDBs) into their systems should evaluate the effect of such implementation on their IT systems. These would include assessing the changes that will be implemented and such changes impact on a business organizations present IT practices. Examining existing CMDB offerings is also important to prepare the business adopting a particular CMDB system so it can deploy the appropriate capabilities for such an offering. A range of vendors are offering their respective products in the CMDB market, providing the business community with different functionalities on top of the CMDB system. For example, the CMDB being offered by BMC ensures that the state of the configuration item or CI in its database can be compared with the actual state based on the most recent innovation of that CI. In the case of Managed Objects, trouble tickets resolve changes in infrastructure in a Remedy system. An investigation can be requested by the CMDB if a change does not have a corresponding ticket. For Universal CMDB, being offered by HP and mValent, current configuration settings are evaluated to determine any change from a model state. Various benefits are available to businesses that opt for a CMDB system. These include greater visibility into system dependencies, enhanced next-generation analytics and root-cause analysis, and a groundwork for IT process automation. Also, businesses will have less service outages as a result of fewer configuration errors. Because of CMDB, an IT organization will become more efficient and productive. Some concerns about CMDB include the substantial work expected from IT and vendors professional services, and the possibility of not delivering full value because of CMDBs being separated from clear service-management goals.
