Laser processes have replaced many industrial processes. This has resulted in an expansion of the overall market for lasers and altered the approach of many industries to their production techniques. Incremental changes have also occurred when a new type of laser technology fuels innovation in emerging markets. The unique Q-switched diode-pumped solid-state lasers, or DPSSLs, represent a portion of the change in the growing market for Rapid Laser Processing (RLP) of fluid panel displays. RLP of Transparent Conductive Oxides (TCOs) has taken the place of a need for costly production equipment. The replacement by TCOs has also streamlined production and lowered capital and operating costs by as much as half. RLP offers companies a chance to eliminate the utilization of large photomasks and the associated lithography equipment in patterning ITO coatings and other kinds of thin film when producing plasma display panels (PDPs). Eliminating the need for tooling provides for changes in production to be handled directly from CAD systems to production tools. This removes dependence of complex masking technology and enhances production. Significant changes cannot be achieved without major research, development, and testing efforts, however. Engineers at Powerlase Ltd. have created diode-pumped, high average power, nanosecond-pulsed, kilohertz repetition rate infrared lasers for RLP.
