TecTrends: 'IPod Doctors' Repair Critical Damage

A cottage industry has sprung up around the need to repair iPods, the popular but fragile digital music player created by Apple Inc. Third-party repair shops offer hope to consumers who have seen their iPods suffer serious damage from a variety of causes. Apple does not accept exchanges for iPods under warranty, even if screens are cracked or if they have been dropped. Consumers can buy extensions on warranties that will add a second year to their coverage. Costs of the extended warranties depend on the iPod model covered. Demetrios Leontaris is an entrepreneur who set up a website to attract customers needing iPod repairs in the New York/New Jersey area. Leontaris often brings his mobile workshop, which is set up in his SUV, to the customer, who waits while the repairs are performed on the device. Leontaris says customers are happy to have their iPods back in working condition. He offers a one-year guarantee on his work as well. Several other entrepreneurs have created businesses in the iPod-repair niche. Aaron Vronko co-founded iPodmods in 2004 with a friend from college. Vronko believes that there is a growing market for iPod repair, since some 90 million of the devices have been sold to date. While iPod repair could mean fewer devices sold, repairers believe that people may be more likely to purchase a newer model if they have repair options.

By default the results are sorted by popularity. To sort by record name click on the 'Name' column header and to sort by popularity click on the 'weight' column header.
