Qualcomm is expected to be busy in the coming months as it unveils the details of its mobile TV service, according to Gina Lombardi, president of the companys MediaFLO USA network. Details include market footprint, vendor handset agreements, and channel lineup. Mobile TV service is being tested by T-Mobile and Sprint, with Verizon Wireless has set its eyes for a launching in the early parts of 2007. MediaFLO plans in the first quarter of 2007 to start live launching in 20 to 30 markets. The plan comes at a time when live networks are underway in different metropolitan areas, including Chicago and Las Vegas. A trial with News Corp.s BSkyB satellite broadcast service using 5 MHz of UHF spectrum showed an average of 240 kb/s over each channel. Eleven channels of QVGA MPEG 4 video were beamed by BSkyB over at 25 frames per second. The results are 20 percent better than Qualcomms expectations for the technology, allowing BSkyB to operate channel on a 5MHz spectrum. With the data, MediaFLO plans to introduce 24 real-time video channels using 6 MHz of spectrum instead of the planned 20. Lombardi also said Qualcomm has settled the content to be used for its multicast mobile TV-that is to deliver what TV has traditionally done, such as sporting events, feature films, and newscasts. However, Qualcomm will not be offering advanced data casting services yet as it wants customers to get used to primary TV services.
