Title: Hackers Swamp Internet Servers

Author: Associated Press Article Type: Product Analysis

Recently, Hackers briefly overwhelmed at least three of the 13 computers that help manage global computer traffic Tuesday in one of the most significant attacks against the Internet since 2002, says a media report posted on July 2, 2006. Experts say the attacks, which were more than usually powerful, lasted up to 12 hours, but were not noticed by most computer users. However, the computer scientists in the trenches globally worked apace to deal with huge data volumes that could have overwhelmed some of the most important Internet conduits. The motivation for the attacks is not certain, but much of the rogue data were traced to South Korea, and the attacks seemed to be targeting UltraDNS, which is the company that operates servers that manage traffic for Web sites that end in org and some other suffixes, say experts. NeuStar owns UltraDNS, and the company said only that it had seen an unexpected increase in traffic. Among targeted root servers managing global Internet traffic were those run by the U.S. Department of Defense and the primary oversight body of the Internet.
