Content producers must have the initiative to protect their content by obtaining management rights over their materials. It is not enough just to watch user-generated content (UGC) search providers such as GooTube seek deals with major copyright owners. Content producers should realize that Internet service providers cannot be sued for copyright infringement for transmitting information over the Internet, according to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). An IP attorney based in Pennsylvania said that DMC guarantees the rights of Google as long as negotiations with copyright owners continue. Copyright owners will find it difficult to monitor their content in light of the anticipated increase in UGC business. Content removal only results in a degree of frustration that will turn off people from posting materials over content producers sites. The volume of downloads/views on UGC sites including MySpace and YouTube will surpass $65 billion, with expected revenues from UGC video to reach $850 million based on predictions of communication services and a study by In-Stat, a provider of research market analysis. Googles approach to reach out to major video sources is a first step for media firms to collaborate with YouTube as a new avenue for content, said the president and senior analyst with consulting and research services firm, Shore Communications, Inc.
