According to Steven Aftergood, senior research analyst at the Federation of American Scientists Project on Government Security, an attempt to suppress information often brings more attention to it, meaning that a government agency or an unhappy celebrity or any other person or entity can decide that a challenge to disclosure is counterproductive. This was the experience of a young woman in Brazil who found that even a judges order to YouTube requiring that the site remove copies of a steamy video of the woman and her boyfriend only resulted in further distribution of copies that had been stored as personal copies on individual PCs. Also highlighted are the circulation of the hanging of Saddam Hussein, documents copied from Diebold's site, and the possibility that some publications are acts of aggression. Mr. Aftergood says such aggressive acts might be part of a vendetta against an individual or acts of incitement against a hated minority. He notes that most reputable media outlets have editors, but, with the ease of publication that is currently the norm, some of the editorial filter is being lost. John Palfrey, professor Internet law at Harvard University, said the responsibility lies with individuals to be more accountable as to what they do on the Internet, just as they are in everyday life. However, 'the benefits of data flow outweigh any harm.
