Technology is seen as a driving force toward changing the class systems of society. In a discussion panel at the Marriott Marquis in New York City, author Thomas J. Friedman expressed that view, which echoes what he says in his book, The World is Flat. Friedman expounds on the concept of technology creating wealth that could cause a global power shift. Friedman, a former New York Times columnist, cited the wealth generation in China and India as an example of the flat world. Ready access to information is also helping in the global shift, giving rise to successful globalization. This could also result in a more stabilized geopolitical scenario. Friedmans view focuses on a flat world, where change is coming from the middle. Another example cited is the way technology could be helping change the constitutional monarchy of Bahrain to democracy. This comes as Bahrainis got a glimpse of how the ruling elites live by zooming in on the palaces, courtesy of Google Earth. Web 2.0 is also a major factor that is changing traditional business structures. The roles of producers and consumers are changing beyond software development and content. Todays business model has customers more involved in every process.
