Apple Computer has long recognized the needs of consumers for functionality way before others realized the value of function-driven as opposed to technology-driven design. Over the years, there has been more emphasis given to technology than to functionality. This has been the case as the industry acknowledged that technology gave rise to functionality. Function-driven design is becoming the trend in computing. Advancements in hardware technology, however, will not stand still, but the changes are expected mainly in mobile wireless networking, better bandwidth for home networks, and improvements in usability. Apple products have been trumped by competitor products from such companies as Dell, HP, Compaq or Toshiba. Each new product that the company introduced was outdone by competitor products. But Apple has understood user needs even as it adopted GUI from Xerox Parc. Apples products perform to suit the needs of users in social settings. The Macbook, for instance, works as a consumer product is expected to work. Its counterparts have been designed not for social functions, but for showcasing engineering feats. Today, consumer electronic companies are adopting the model that has always been the center of Apples business: to focus on users.
