Title: Fabric's Workspace Gets Eclipsed

Author: Handy, Alex Article Type: Product Analysis

The business process management and development environment, Fabric 7.0 from webMethods, includes a workspace based on Eclipse, 193 AJAX widgets, and the Cerebra metadata library. This library comes from the acquisition in August 2006 of Cerebra by webMethods. The company also acquired Infravio and integrated support for X-Registry and X-Broker, but the Infravio products will not be updated in time for the Fabric 7.0 release. Fabric is customized around X-Registry and X-Broker, and the newly titled webMethods Infravio X-Registry and webMethods Infravio X-Broker will follow a development schedule that is separate from that of Fabric. While the idea of having multiple registries in one product may appear incongruous, the Cerebra library and the Infravio repository have two different purposes, according to Susan Ganeshan, vice president with webMethod's product development organization. Ganeshan says that the Infravio registry stores metadata about web services so that it can govern and manage these services, while the Cerebra library stores information about all assets and uses an inferencing engine that automatically determines how a structure can be visualized. This engine analyzes how each item is used or called by others. The new Eclipse-based design environment provides business analysts and developers with a single environment in which to develop and interconnect web services.
