The Service Oriented Application (SOA) methodologies, along with Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), are important in helping the adoption of Unified Communications in business environments. This is because SOA methodologies are being used by larger enterprises for business applications and developments. Such a situation influences the implementation of various products, including those from Oracle, Microsoft and IBM. The Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information, the WWW Consortium, and the Web Services Interoperability Organization set the different standards for SOA. These include other XML forms, Web Services Definition Language, and Simple Objective Access Protocol. SOA also helps in eliminating human delays in a business process because it can simultaneously deliver a range of capabilities. Thus, the Unified Commission in an SOA model provides a range of real-time services such as personalization, speech recognition, session control, and presence and location status with the implementation of the SOA Enterprise Service Bus. Originally, SOA was developed to restructure, manage and bolster business process. But the current trend allows SOA to play a major role in application convergence. There are three factors that promote application convergence: enhancement of customer service in self-service and agent-assisted contact centers, extension of business process and application value to maximize Unified Communications capabilities, and importance of real-time collaboration competencies in project management and document handling situations. These factors emphasize the roles being played by SOA and SIP in application convergence in all aspects of the IT industry.
