Talks with families that have close ties with their young adult members show that it is important to talk the same talk, stay busy, rethink expectations, make many calls and send many messages, avoid regarding each other as friends, keep criticism under wraps, and teach each other. These guidelines can help young adults master the challenges of crafting decent relationships with Mom and Dad and help parents reset their interactions to stay current with the times. Parents who talk to their children on the kids terms and through their media are on course for closeness, and those who avoid thinking of twentysomethings as full adults are also on the right track. The fact is that the years of the 20s are now an extended adolescence for many people, who need more time to break away than in the past. The group that has not settled on a career or spouse is attracted strongly to the childhood home. When young adult children are in touch most of the time, it may be because there are so many ways to do so from any location, says Purdue researcher Karen Fingerman, who conducted a study on the subject of family relationships. Adult children still want boundaries that keep parents in the role of parents, and they will not listen much to unasked-for advice.
