Jeffrey Gabbay, owner of Cupron, says he has created the first textiles that include copper oxide, an agent that kills bacteria and odor on contact. The socks, says Gabbay, can heal and prevent athlete's foot and are one of the company's best selling products. Mr. Gabby has not washed his sport socks since 2004 because, he says, he doesnt have to. This is a test process meant to determine how far he and the socks can go playing golf without washing, but he does not mean to encourage poor hygiene. Cupron also provides self-sterilizing makeup brushes and bedsheets, which are part of a growing market called performance textiles. The products are widely sold in the U.S. and Europe, and the U.S. military, as well as one of the globe's larges sockmakers, are among Cupron's customers. Gabbay has powerful anecdotal evidence that textiles made with small copper particles can heal diabetic ulcers, stop the spread of disease in hospitals, and cure many other ailments. However, these claims have not been verified by indisputable scientific tests, and medical experts remain doubtful of the claims. Textile expert and educator Blanton Godfrey says there is much interest in antimicrobials, particularly antiviral coating, and Whoever gets it right will have a very nice business.
