The new version of Office 2007 from Microsoft Corp. represents a significant overhaul of the productivity software suite. Testers welcomed the new version's enhanced potential for collaboration, but noted that it must be linked to Office SharePoint Server 2007 in order to work. Users are likely to receive a boost in productivity from the collaboration features, but information technology (IT) managers will have to assist them in taking full advantage of the new capabilities. Office SharePoint Server 2007 allows users to have a location to store and share content. This can be enhanced to a degree with prepackaged document workflow elements. Testers found they could configure a folder of workflows and invite users to participate in them. They could also establish due dates and assign tasks. There are four basic workflow processes in Office SharePoint Server 2007. These are document approval, feedback collection, signature collection, and disposition approval. Workflows can be launched conditionally. For example, conditional launch can occur when a document is altered. If a Word document is subject to sharing on Office SharePoint Server 2007, or it is subject to SharePoint workflow, the document will show an Office Button that includes the tools required to link in to the document management requirements of SharePoint. Word handily exposes workflow alternatives within the application.
