Microsoft Corp.'s new version of Office, Microsoft Office 2007, moves into new territory and represents a major upgrade in the productivity suite. While critics had expected Microsoft to provide only incremental and minimal changes in the product, they were surprised to discover the extent to which the company has changed its core productivity suite. Office 2007 is a major improvement, including changes such as the user-interface ribbon and new file formats. The upgrade represents Microsoft's first effort at really changing the way people manage, edit, and create their content. Testers found the ribbon innovation to be one of the most useful additions. While it is not suitable for all tasks, for layout, design, and Excel functions, it is likely to become indispensable for many users. The ribbon makes it easy to find options, but it is only one of the many usability improvements in the software. Throughout Office 2007, a number of smaller changes and enhancements make the everyday use of Office faster and easier. One of the changes singled out by testers is the ability to configure Word to make the 'paste as unformatted text' option a default. Many information technology (IT) departments fear the move to a very different Office suite, however, believing that users will have a difficult time making the switch. Training issues will arise, but they should not become insurmountable problems.
