CA (Computer Associates International) has decided to increase the array of options provided for the management of a mixture of virtual servers and server clusters in the new version of its Unicenter Advanced Systems Management software. Many information technology (IT) organizations are adopting server virtualization and clustering. As a result, they are facing complex issues introduced by these technologies. Many data centers that are implementing virtualization increase the magnitude of the problem by using the virtualization products of multiple vendors. According to Paula Daily, director of product management at CA, her firm is unique in providing a wide range of coverage in its Unicenter ASM r11.1. The software monitors and manages virtual servers and clusters. The software covers a broad range of environments, including Hewlett-Packard's HP MC/ServiceGuard, IBM's High Availability Cluster Multi-Processing (HACMP) and pSeries logical partitioning (LPAR) capable eServers, Microsoft's Virtual Server and Cluster Server, and Red Hat's Red Hat Advanced Server cluster. It can also handle Sun Microsystems' enterprise and midrange servers and Sun Cluster and Sun Fire servers, Veritas Cluster Servers that run Sun's Solaris and Windows, and VMware's ESX and GSX servers. According to Daley, the product is 'platform-agnostic' and seeks to provide as much flexibility to organizations as they need.
