Salesforce.com announced that ApexConnect, which is an integration tool designed to connect on-demand applications to back-end systems, will be built on the firm's Apex programming language for multi-tenant applications. The availability of this new tool allows about 400 third-party applications on the Salesforce AppExchange platform to work with legacy applications, web services, and other on-demand applications. Most Java programmers will be familiar with the syntax used in Apex. Apex also allows any application or component created with it to be shared with other applications on AppExchange. There are a number of new tools available with this platform, including ConnectOut, which is an out-going messaging API that can manage an event in an external system on the basis of a trigger event in Salesforce.com. According to Kendall Collins, senior vice president of marketing at Salesforce, it can start a process with an SAP or Oracle system. ConnectOracle, another ApexConnect tool, provides information technology (IT) departments with a way to link to any Oracle back-office system in order to synchronize data between the CRM application of Salesforce and the ERP systems of Oracle. The Apex API also allows middleware partners to connect to any part of the on-demand system from Salesforce.
