Title: WAITING ON MOBILE TV

The year is nearly over and the wireless broadcast video services that were promised for 2006 have not become a reality. Qualcomm has not made an announcement about a commercial launch, or at least a commercial trial of its MediaFLO services. Crown Castle Mobile Media (now Modeo) has tested its digital video broadcast-hand-held (DVB-H) network in Houston, TX, but has yet to deliver on a promised 2006 commercial launch of its Modeo services. But company CEO John Kelly made a promise to have Modeo available by 2007. The last player, Aloha Partners, announced that it would kick off its HiWire service in Las Vegas, NV, using T-Mobile as its test subject. The three providers are keeping silent on specific details about their multicast mobile video services because of competitive reasons for some. For instance, MediaFLO is avoiding doing anything public because anything that it does will disclose the TV strategy of its exclusive partner Verizon Wireless. However, the delays in their commercial launch may be due to all three companies trying to cope with the idiosyncrasies of their respective spectrum. Qualcomm and HiWire are dealing with interference issues because the 700 MHz UHF spectrum, which both the companies own, is still being used by traditional TV broadcasters. Modes own interference issue has something to do with its request for the FCC to permit the company to increase the power at which it can broadcast over its 1.6 GHz spectrum, or at any rate re-assess the method by which it gauges power output.
