Title: Samsung Changes Its Strategy in Bid to Regain Market Share

Samsung Electronics Company decided to focus on mid-end to high-end cell phones, but this approach has resulted in losses of market share that contrast to the gains obtained by its rivals. Lee Ki Tae, president of Samsung's telecommunications business, says the firm will increase the number of handsets priced at $60 and less to between ten percent and 15 percent of its total shipments in 2007. He hopes that this will help to recapture some of the lost market share. Samsung's market share during the third quarter of 2006 dropped to 12.2 percent from 12.5 percent in 2005. Comparatively, Nokia Corp.'s market share increased from 32.5 percent to 35.1 percent, and Motorola Inc.'s market share rose from 18.7 percent to 20.6 percent during the same period, according to Gartner, a market research firm. Industry analysts have cited Samsung's focus on the high-end part of the cell phone market as the reason for its losses. Nokia and Motorola benefited from stronger sales in emerging markets like China and India by offering lower-cost models targeted at the first-time mobile-phone user. Lee says that his company could 'easily' reach a 20-percent market share if it dramatically lowered its average selling prices, but he does not feel this is the appropriate move. Lee believes that raising the percentage of lower-end models in markets like China and India will allow the company to recover some of its lost market share.
