In an illustration of how the number of obsessive computer geeks has grown, Caribbean cruise lines are now offering geek cruises, which allow computer enthusiasts to socialize and learn about technology onboard a cruise ship. A wide range of themed cruises have been developed in recent years to serve the unique interests of art, comedy, and military history buffs, to name just a few. According to the Cruise Lines International Association, affinity trips have become an established market niche. Computer geeks have traveled to the Caribbean, Alaska, Hawaii, and Europe, while enjoying lectures from the stars of the computer world. For example, in MacMania V, Mac fans and their families, ranging in age from 14 to 83, paid $1,650 and more to spend a week with Apple employees and other Mac experts on a Holland America Line cruise. The cruise made stops in Belize, Guatemala, and Mexico. The idea for the cruise began with Neil Bauman, former programmer, and his wife, Theresa Mazich, who has an interest in computers and medicine. They got the idea after they took a Star-Trek-themed cruise to Alaska and had the chance to meet some of the actors from the series. Bauman became convinced that other computer fanatics like him would be interested in taking a cruise with their own celebrity heroes. Baum's first cruise featured Larry Wall, the creator of the Perl language, and 192 Perl programmers.
