eXtensible Markup Language (XML), even though it is widely used as a flexible tool for data representation, is a sleeping giant in the sense that it is becoming a more powerful soup-to-nuts medium for enterprise applications. XML is moving deep down into databases and higher up to XML-based languages that use the semantics of XML to perform self-manipulation. The resulting unified platform is creating quickly expanding groups that lead to large application toolmaker investments. JustSystems xvcd and xfy Enterprise Solution for IBM DB2 and Oracle Content Database 10g have been announced, and IBM and JustSystems are allying. These developments are indicative of XML-centered unification on multiple levels. DB2 9, which was released in Summer 2006, can be used to obtain performance advantages and straightforward representation of hierarchical relationships that are available with native data representation down to the disk using XML tree structures. DB2 9 also preserves the value of development skills and infrastructures that are based on known relational design. XML transformation can be applied to allow applications to offer different abilities to users with disparate roles, requirements, and privileges. Developers have to develop XML skill sets and master XML-centered tools as the language of the enterprise more and more uses XML for nouns and verbs.
