Harvard Medical School's quasi-elastic light scattering (QLS) and fluorescent ligand scanning (FLS) on a single platform could lead to earlier detection and better management of Alzheimers and other neurodegenerative diseases. In 2003, a team at the Harvard Medical School led by Lee Goldstein reported that the same beta-amyloid aggregates (A-beta proteins) that create the signature plaques in the brains of Alzheimer's patients could be found in the periphery of the lens and the aqueous humor of the eyes of the same patients. The team found that detectable similarities between the proteins in the brain and in the eye could be measured non-invasively and tracked optically. The team developed QLS and FLS to permit non-invasive quantitative measurements of amyloid aggregation in the lens of the eye. Neuroptix is commercializing the technologies and combining them to create a single platform screening system designed for use in a doctor's office. QLS scattering, which is also known as photon-correlation spectroscopy, laser Rayleight scattering, dynamic light scattering, or self-beat spectroscopy, offers information about the diffusion coefficient of large molecules and small particles suspended in a fluid. Neuroptics has also licensed a full series of fluorescent ligands from the University of Pittsburgh and is developing them for human use.
