Microsoft Corp. has introduced its new Xbox 360 video game console and is ready to do battle with Sony Computer Entertainment and Nintendo, its major competitors in this space. Industry experts expect Nintendo's Wii console to defeat PlayStation 3 (PS3) from Sony during the 2006 holiday season, but the Xbox 360 could come out as the real winner of the fight to dominate the next-generation console market. Sony and Nintendo introduced their new consoles in November 2006, and both systems are in short supply. Nintendo will likely sell 4 million consoles and will handily beat Sony's PlayStation 3, since only 2 million of these will be available. The Wii is also going to be sold in Europe, while the PlayStation 3 will not enter that market until March 2007. Sony represents the defending champion in the market, having shipped over 200 million PlayStation and PlayStation 2 consoles. The Wii has a price advantage over the relatively expensive PS3, however. This round of game console competition could go to Microsoft's Xbox 360 because it has been available since November 2005 in two configurations. There are over 150 games available for the system. With a large number of available games and hardware units already in the market, Microsoft hopes that the millions of game players who cannot find the Wii or PS3 products during the holiday season will try the new Xbox 360.
