UIU 3.0, the universal imaging utility from Big Bang LLC, allows information technology (IT) managers to maintain fewer images while supporting a wide array of different types of hardware. The product works with disk imaging software. It has a cache of about 250 MB of common drivers and a utility that helps to configure Sysprep from Microsoft Corp. UIU 3.0 was updated in August 2006 and is relatively inexpensive. UIU 3.0 takes IT managers through all the steps required for preparing a machine for deployment in a production environment. Using the product, testers found it easy to access the Sysprep utility and to access all the files and images. The interface of the product is simple as well, and it will likely take even the most inexperienced system manager only a few hours to master. UIU 3.0 is like any image management tool in that users must make backups of the reference computer in case something goes wrong during the image creation process. A new feature of the upgraded version is the ability to access the Big Bang website automatically in order to download the most current set of drivers. Testers found that UIU 3.0 automatically checked which .exe and driver updates were needed for the reference system. UIU 3.0 has no central management functionality, so IT managers must check manually to ensure that distributed copies are set up in a manner consistent with central-office guidelines.
