Supporters of net neutrality want the government to create measures that will ensure all Internet traffic will be treated equally by broadband providers. Content providers and users have little control over the way that packets of data travel across the Internet. The idea that these packets should be treated the same way, regardless of their source of destination, represents the core of the net neutrality concept. The concept also involves ideas like the ability of users to make their own decisions about how they use bandwidth on as many devices as they want. Because Internet traffic has become a critical part of commercial and civic life in the United States, the movement for net neutrality is looking for government protections that will require all lawful traffic to be treated the same way by the owners of networks. Such protections will ensure the free flow of ideas and commerce in the future. Large content providers, such as Amazon, eBay, and Google, find themselves pitted against large broadband providers like AT&T, BellSouth, and Comcast. The government has a major role in the net neutrality debate, and Congress is moving to pass relevant legislation. The Federal Communications Commission is ready to impose regulations as well. Obtaining net neutrality requires businesses and consumers to work together to educate nontechnical people about the issues at stake and to pressure the government to take action.
