Title: W3C Giving Sites to the Blind

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has published the start of the Web Accessibility Initiative's Accessible Rich Internet Application suite (WAI-ARIA). Best practices documents are contained in the suite. One of the implications of this effort is better access to RIA, such as Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX) widgets, for the blind. The WAI-ARIA includes a road map and documents that present how roles, states and properties should be explained in accessible RIA. It provides developers guidelines for making applications useful to the blind and physically disabled. It is also a means to standardize civic website design practices. The released guidelines have been adopted by the government and the European Union. Meanwhile, RIA using AJAX and Flash applications need new best practices. Issues on how to reconcile scripted programs with the W3C standards have emerged but they will be addressed in the early part of 2007. One thing that worries clients is the possibility of encountering an accessibility lawsuit, as what happened to giant retailer Target. The trial is pending in court. However, whether accessibility to websites is mandated or not, business groups may still need to revise their sites for legal protection. Making application development easier on programmers is the main concern of the project. The road map, state and properties and roles files are open for review.
