A media transport network has two separate parts: the contribution and distribution networks. The distribution network, sometimes called the forward distribution network, sends broadcast quality content from the production facility, content owner or rights owner to intermediary distribution points, which may be cable headends, telco IPTV headends, and satellite uplinks. The emergence of HDTV (high definition TV) is driving the migration to terrestrial fiber-based links from the usual satellite transport. Two recent rulings by regulators have quickly increased use of digital TV and HDTV in particular. One is a budget bill passed at the end of 2005 by Congress called the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005. The act requires cessation of all analog TV broadcasts on February 17, 2009, at which time all future TV in the U.S. will be digital. TV sets with conventional National Television System Committee (NTSC)-defined tuners will not be able to receive over the air signals. Another factor is the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)'s requirement that all TV sets of a particular size have to have a built-in HDTV tuner as of a specific date. There is a much larger amount of video content in the contribution and distribution networks than ever before, and a growing part of that content is HD. Among topics covered are the high data rate of HD, the inevitability of fiber requirements for HDTV, a case study involving Broadwing Communications (which offers media service over what the company claims to be the largest Dynamic Synchronous Transfer Mode (DTM) network in the world), and other companies that believe the media services industry represents a lucrative vertical market.
